[People of China]. [between 1899 and 1901]

This group of photographs taken in Beijing at the time of the Boxer Rebellion includes groups of Manchu men and women posed in the courtyards of private homes and at the London Mission, a Manchu family group departing for a visit to relatives, a class of girls at the American Board Missions, and groups of Chinese and Manchu Christians gathered at the Congregational Mission to present Dr. William S. Ament, a prominent minister with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, with an umbrella. There are also two images of Japanese soldiers beheading Chinese prisioners.

James Ricalton (circa 1844 -1929) was a New Jersey school teacher, traveler, inventor, and photographer. His occasional work for Thomas Edison included traveling through Asia to discover bamboo plants suitable for light bulb filaments (1888-1889), and testing Edison's motion picture camera (1912).
